Walasse Ting (1929–2010) was one of the most distinctive artists of the twentieth century. His exuberant paintings, expressive drawings, and fearless use of color placed him among the leading international artists of his generation. His work is represented in major museum collections throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and the Shanghai Art Museum.
The Caprice Couselle Walasse Ting Gallery Project seeks to establish a permanent public gallery in Grand Gorge, New York, dedicated to the preservation, study, and exhibition of a unique private collection of paintings, drawings, and handwritten works by Walasse Ting. The collection represents an exceptional body of work from the mid-1980s, an important period in Walasse Ting’s artistic development. While the paintings remain in excellent to pristine condition, many of the charcoal drawings now require professional conservation, archival housing, and a stable museum environment to ensure their preservation for future generations.OUR IMMEDIATE GOALS ARE TO:
Preserve and conserve the collection to museum standards.
Create a secure, climate-appropriate gallery.
Make the collection available to scholars, students, and the public.
Develop educational programs and exhibitions celebrating Walasse Ting’s contribution to modern art.
Establish the Gallery as a cultural destination in the Catskills.
Curate exhibitions featuring local and regional artists, allowing them to gain visibility among the visitors, collectors, scholars, and art enthusiasts drawn to Grand Gorge by the Walasse Ting Collection.
The Caprice Couselle Walasse Ting Gallery is a project of the Catskill Folklife Center of Grand Gorge, a New York not-for-profit organization. The Gallery is being developed through a long-term strategy that combines private philanthropy, foundation grants, public funding, and community partnerships to preserve, interpret, and share this unique collection with the public. Our mission is simple: to preserve an extraordinary artistic legacy, support today’s artists, and make both accessible to future generations.
